Hi, and thanks for reading my post.
I installed a bunch of critical updates a few days ago (not wga), and
when I restarted as a result of them my computer just hung at the boot
screen. I shut it down and booted in safe mode, but a few seconds
after I logged in I got a blue screen of death which I couldn't read
because it restarted so quickly. I booted again, this time into safe
mode with the command prompt and turned off the auto-restart. I tried
running system file checker but it said my rpc service wasn't running,
even though I looked and it said that it was running, so I began a
chkdsk. The chkdsk froze at 32%, and so I restarted again into safe
with command. I told the chkdsk to run and auto-fix on the next boot.
It restarted a couple of times and now it freezes before it gets into
any safe modes or regular windows, although it gets past loading all
the drivers (that it prints). I booted with an xp sp2 cd and ran the
recovery console and tried chkdsk, which now freezes at 8%, when run
with either /p or /r. If I run it normally it says that the disk looks
fine but doesn't scan anything.
Is it time to reinstall windows, or are there other things that I
could/should try? I don't have access to a cd burner, but I do have
access to a floppy since I am currently running an old laptop with
linux. Any help is appreciated. To reinstall windows, do I just
proceed with a normal install, or is there a specific reinstall option
somewhere?
