System Hangs For No Reason - Event ID: 7016

System hangs for no apparent reason. This mainly occurs when I'm away from PC
(and after Screensaver has cut-in), but not always and sometimes just occurs
when I am working. Event Viewer shows Event ID: 7016 - The SmartLinkService
has reported an invalid current state0. Detailed readout shows: Service
Control Manager (Version 5) System Event Log - EVENT_BAD_SERVICE_STATE - The
%1 service has reported an invalid current state %2.

Anybody have any clues?

The SmartLinkService is connected with your dialup modem. This MS KB
article suggests a poorly-written service (this would have been written
by your modem mftr. or computer mftr. in their drivers). Does this seem
applicable to you?

What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?
Did you update modem drivers? If yes, roll back to ones that worked. If
no, try uninstalling the modem and swapping it out for a known-working
one as possibly the hardware is failing. Without knowing if this
condition just started or the answer to "what changed", that's as
specific as I can get without seeing the machine.

Post back with more details about the computer, changes, relevant
machine history, etc. to get more help.

Thank you, Malke, for your response. I do not use my dial-up modem as I am
now on broadband, but I did a full reinstall of my system two weeks ago. I
have now disabled my dial-up modem, so hopefully this problem should now go
away.
Thanks for your advice. Will let you know if this resolves the problem.
Once again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Probably you didn't install the drivers for the modem after your clean
install. If everything else is working OK, then disabling the modem was
the right thing to do. If you need more help, please do post back.
