System hangs at shutdown

Mark

When I shutdown or restart WinXP the system
displays "Logging Off..." and then freezes. The only way
to recover is to perform a hardware reset.

This system hang is also causing problems with new
software installs that require a system reboot to
complete the install. The software never completes
installation but continuously asks for system reboots to
complete the install.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Great page but it did not help me solve my shutdown
problems.

Because the system hangs while displaying "Logging Off...
", I assume that the system is having trouble notifying
the network (small home peer-to-peer network) that it is
shutting down.

Any other suggestions?

Hi, Mark.

Jim's solutions usually work. :^{

I know nothing of networks, small or otherwise. I hope someone else will
jump in to help you figure out the problem.

Try logging off users. When that's finished, then perform a shutdown. Is
there still a delay? With both actions or just one?

If the software installs offer the option to restart manually, try
selecting that instead of the automatic restart.
