System Halts during installation

Can someone help? I've tried to install windows XP Pro.,
and the installation process does copy and run through the
installation files. Then it reboots and copies the system
files, and continues on. However, when the process goes
through detecting the hardware, it recognizes the video,
mouse and keyboard, but fails after that point and the
blue screen of dead appears and just says that the
installation can't continue and "system halt". And at
that point I can't back up to the windows 98 configuration
that I'm upgrading from. What is the cause of the system
halt problem, what to do to remedy this, and/or how do I
return to the windows 98 configuration? Thanks.

I would also recommend checking to see if you can update the BIOS of your
computer.
