System Freezing and Lock-up

I (and others it seems) have problems with Windows Vista locking up and
freezing, it appears you have to wait a few minutes for the system to finish
doing whatever it is doing to free up again, this seems to happen randomly
and some have hinted at a hardware problem but, this a new computer from dell
and it should be tested and be alright, otherwise why would they sell it
knowing it would suffer these system stutters.

I think Microsoft needs to work more closely and with a better strategy with
hardware manufacturers to correct these failings, otherwise people won't be
as receptive to Vista as they could be, I hope within the coming weeks system
updates will be made available to correct a lot of these issues that
dedicated users and professionals use to make Vista a more usable and
enjoyable Operating System.

P.S - Even as a I wrote this my system froze for 2 mins.

I've been ranting about OEM's shipping Vista boxes without duly testing the
crapware they ship on the box, or even, sometimes, the drivers included, and
I've been doing it for months. (I'm not saying I'm always right on the
issue, but one must rant every once in a while... ;-) ). Yes, indeed, Ian,
why -would- they ship it thusly? Hmm...

I've installed Vista "clean" on numerous Dell model PC's. (Optiplex GX745,
GX620, Latitude D820, D620, and an XPS Gen 2.) Never a BSOD. Never a system
freeze. Never a performance issue. (Am I saying Vista is problem free?
Noooooo.... and I'll come clean... never a BSOD, for real. System freezes?
If I've experienced any, they've been so infrequent as to qualify for "never
a..." status. Same with performance issues.)

I know you probably only received a "restore" DVD from Dell and do not have
a "real" Vista install DVD. In that circumstance, unfortunately, the only
solution I can offer, after backing up all data, of course, is to check
vendor websites for newer drivers than shipped with your Dell unit. If newer
drivers are not available or don't address the problem, then you'll have to
start disabling and/or removing the crapware. Because, imho, it's not Vista
that's causing your problem.

What Dell do you have? What are the specs? (CPU, RAM, HD, video, sound,
etc...)

OEMs like Dell are selling garbage. Just look at some of their adverts:
1 Vista Basic with 512mb RAM; very, very basic!
2 Vista Home Premium with 1 Gig RAM shared with Graphics. What a joke!

They should NOT be allowed to sell the S*** that they are selling.

Start by uninstalling Norton or McAfee and whatever other crapware they
preinstalled.
