No answer from me but I have the same question. I
recently installed XP Home and since then the PC will
occasionally freeze, requiring a hard reboot. It freezes
randomly and without warning. Ditto on the updates.

This is often caused by flaky RAM. XP is far fussier about failing
hardware than Win9x/ME. Start by doing a RAM test (I like Memtest86).
It can also be caused by installing on a machine with an older BIOS.
Sometimes those types of issues can be solved with a BIOS update. Since
neither of you gives any system specifics (processor, amount of RAM,
power supply, hardware specifics), I can't offer any more help. Also,
look in Event Viewer (Control Panel>Administrative Tools) for clues.
Please post back with details if you need more help.
