System file checker doesn't work in XP Home

Hello:

I'm trying to run SFC /SCANNOW in Windows XP Home SP2. Whenever I
start this utility, it immediately asks me for the XP Home SP2 setup
disc, which I place in the CD tray as requested. For some reason,
it's not seeing the disc, as it keeps asking for the disc again as
soon as I hit the Retry button. The CD drive works just fine.

I don't know why it's asking me for the disc in the first place, since
I have almost 500 megs of files in c:\windows\system32\dllcache. It's
my understanding that these files are there for comparison and backup
purposes.

Nevertheless, I humor the sytem by giving it the setup disc. It still
doesn't want to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Solved! Edited the registry key at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Apparently the program isn't smart enough to scan the currently active
CD drives. You have to give it a specific drive letter in that
registry key.
