System error on startup

Every time I start up my MS XP Pro after several days of power off, I get a
system start up error that says a driver is corrupted or damaged and requires
repair. Using original start disc to repair asks for an administrator
password which I believe was never established as I am the sole user of my
PC, so I cannot advance.
Most times, a reboot gets me back into my system, but I don't believe the
problem has been solved because it repeats. This is the system error code I
received today: "Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter 2
805509e9, parameter 3 ba79e6f8, parameter 4 00000000." What should I do?

I'm not sure from what I read when you are being asked for an administrator
password. If you haven't set one just press Enter & that should get you a
bit further on. I hope that's helpful. regards,
Max

I would have done that, but it says to press Enter to quit and exit...and it
did. I later checked my system account to change the password, and as I
thought, there is none.

That's usually a hardware failure. A problem memory / RAM module is likely
culprit. A failing video board may cause this error also. If you're
comfortable working inside the computer, I suggest reseating boards and RAM
modules and running Memtest86 for at least several hours to test memory.
