System Error 53, network path not found

Hi all, thanks for viewing my question.

I have managed to setup rras on my W2K3 server to be used as a vpn server
and use WinXP as a vpn client to test the vpn connection. It was successful
and I could access the folder C:\TEST on the server, that I originally used
for sharing. I am using a dsl connection and tested the connection using
dial-up.

Then I went to my client and did everything the same. The server also runs
on W2K3 and I did everything the same. Everything was fine, the vpn client
(dial-up) can connect to the server. However when I tried to access the
shared folder, it couldn't even find it. They use cable internet. The only
difference that I see is that the server is running in a domain environment.

Then I tried to use a third party vpn client and the connection also works.
I can ping the server internal ip from outside. However, when I tried using
'net use', it gives me System Error 53: network path not found.

I suspect that it is because it's a domain environment.

fyi this is on the server:
computer name: DOMAIN.area.company.com
domain name: area.company.com
the shared folder is C:\BACKUP
username: user
password: password

I have used the followings

net use V: \\DOMAIN\BACKUP /user:area\user

net use V: \\DOMAIN.area.company.com\BACKUP /user:area.company.com\user

both give me System Error 53

am i missing something? so how am I suppose to use the 'net use' command in
the given scenario?

thanks
ccd

System error 53 - The network path was not found.

Symptom: when using net view \\ip or \\computername, you get system error
53.

Resolutions: 1) if it is domain environment, check your WINS; 2) if it is
peer-to-peer workgroup, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP; 3) make sure the machine
is running; 4) make sure file and Printer Share enabled on remote computer;
5) make sure client for ms networks is enabled on local computer; 6) make
sure you type the correct name.

I just solved my problem (same as yours).

Firewall on client. Disable it an try again. In my case Zone Alarm Internet
Security Zone was setup as High. This prevents any file sharing.

Another method- I added the server ip address in question to the truste
zones in Zone Alarm and was able to map a drive. I kept the interne
settings at high
