system crash?

I downloaded Defender, installed it, checked for updates and did a quick scan
with no problem. Then I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and half way through
the scan the computer just shuts off. Then if I scan with Defender, same
thing, the computer shuts off mid scan. Same with Norton Antivirus, shuts off
mid scan. I uninstalled Defender, ran Registry Mechanic to clean it off good,
then everything works fine again. I downloaded Defender again, it worked fine
for the first go round, then the same system shutoff happens no matter what
scan I run. Any ideas as to what or why this is happening?

Thanks!

aquintano: If you don't have Registry Mechanic, buy it. Is the best. Run it,
and let me know about your Internet problem.

I never had a problem when I had MS Antispyware. It was my understanding that
the two programs catch different problems, which I have actually seen in
action. When I had Antispyware, I would run them one after the other and
quite ofen one would catch something the other one would not (run MS first,
nothing shows; run Spybot 2nd, it catches something.) Now I did hear that
Defender was supposed to be more all inclusive, so maybe I won't need both
anymore, but at this juncture I'm really not sure which one I would drop
off...

Is anyone else running both Spybot and defender and having problems with them?

Check your PC cooling fans and vents, especially the processor fan and make
sure they are clean and running properly. If this is a laptop, vacuum the
area where you can hear the fans operating.

I know this sounds rediculous, but it's becoming a very common problem,
especially for Spybot S&D and Defender, since they cause heavy processor
utilization during scans which means lots of heat.

One indicator of this problem is when the cooling fan(s) speed up shortly
before the shutdown. The PC thermal protection is designed to detect an
overheat condition and simply shuts down to protect itself, with no warning
or logs of the reason.

Download Speed Fan (it's free). If you luck out (meaning the motherboard on
your computer or laptop has temperature sensing that Speed Fan recognizes),
you can monitor the temps as you do your scans.
