Normal Windows Defender behavior?

I disabled Windows Defender for about 24 hours on my computer, then
enabled it again this afternoon. About 5 minutes later, Defender ran a
quick scan, even though it wasn't at the scheduled time. Is Defender
automatically programmed to do this after it has been turned off? I checked
XP's Event Viewer, and no new definitions were installed. Just a quick
scan.

It will do a scan when a scheduled scan has been missed. If you don't have
it set to download definitions before scanning, there wouldn't be a
definition check--not sure whether you were current or not.
