My copy of XP Home crashed while running a game and when
trying to restart i started getting the following error
messages

config initialization failed

driver irql not less or equal

stop: c0000221 unknown hard error \systemroot\system32
\ntdll.dll

i've tried restarting windows in safe mode but i just get
the same messages. is there any way of sorting out this
problem without reinstalling the operating system?

try turning off the powermanagement setting and try a
chkdsk using system recovery if your version is a retail
copy -

Sounds like your game program may not be compatible with
the windows system. Probably either sound, video, or
communications. Which game were you trying to run?

Reinstall windows after reformatting. Do not install that
game until you check it's website for updates or patches
specifically designed for xp. Then install both game and
updates/patches at the same time, then restart.
