Three of four copies of System 32 folder appear after
startup. No apparent harm as they disappear after they
are closed, but I'm wondering if this is a symptom of some
kind of virus or Trojan.

Any ideas?

"they disappear after they are closed" - can you please explain this statement? You open Windows Explorer you navigate to one of these strange "System 32" folders NOT under C:\WINNT. You see the folder and then you select it. It opens. Then you select off it it closes and it "disappears?"

Usually a damaged or otherwise corrupt "Run" key value.

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by
an incomplete program removal, in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
