Browser launch and booting problems

I'm cross-posting to mozilla.support.firefox because my browser problem
may be caused by booting problems.

BROWSER PROBLEM
When I launch Firefox browser, it opens but I get this error message
regardless of which address I enter:

"Connection Interrupted. The connection to the server was reset while
the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating
a connection. Please try again."

I tried going back to v3.0.6; same problem. Internet Explorer doesn't
open at all. Thunderbird works okay. I can send and receive messages.
I'm using it to generate and send this message.

BOOTING PROBLEMS
When I boot (Windows 2000 Pro, SP4 plus dozens of hot fixes), I get a
series of dialog boxes reading:

"<Program Name> has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You
will need to restart the program."

The Program Names are:

reader_sl.exe - speed launcher for Adobe Acrobat; located in
\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader folder

PDVDServ.exe - belongs to Power DVD Remove Control Service; in
\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD folder

QTTask.exe - something to do with Quick Time; in \WINNT\System 32 folder

QuickDCF.exe - part of the EXIF program for transferring photos from
my digital camera to the computer; in \Program Files\FinePixViewer folder

tbctray.exe - part of Turtle Beach sound card; in the \WINNT\System
32 folder

I think all these program are associated with the System Tray icons at
Startup. The other items in the tray work okay.

OTHER PROBLEMS
While Notepad doesn't load at boot time, if I open it it shuts down
within 4 seconds and the above message appears. Same with a program
called Startup.exe, which gives me control over the programs that run at
boot time.

I've done a Spybot scan. No problems. I tried running an Ad-Aware Smart
Scan; the program shuts down after 17 seconds, without finding anything.
If I try Full Scan the program shuts down after 11 seconds. But if I
just stay with the opening screen, without starting any scans, the
program does NOT shut down within the two minutes I waited.

Thanks for your assistance.

This is usually invoked by a shortcut located in the startup folder. I
don't know why it's causing errors but my advice, if you are a typical
user of the Acrobat reader (i.e occasional), is to simply remove the
shortcut and save the memory space. Acrobat Reader might start a little
more slowly but I doubt you'll notice much difference.

If Adobe are ashamed of the startup times of their programs they might
try removing some of the considerable bloat from the software rather
than spilling that bloat over to the users' ram.

If you want to try it first, just move the shortcut temporarily, then
reboot and run the reader .... although if it's not loading, you're
effectively doing this already.
