Sysprep problem

Mike Ballard

I used sysprep to create an image of a WinXp box. I then
used Ghost 7.5 to create the image file for reimaging
other pc's (different makes and models). For the most
part, everything works fine but on a few machines, after
imaging the box, upon reboot the pc will either come up
to a black screen and freeze or it will come up to the
Windows boot menu screen. If it does make it to the boot
menu, whether I choose safe mode, boot normally, etc the
pc will just freeze on the boot menu screen and I cannot
get any further. My guess is that it is related to a mass
storage controller not included in sysprep. I used the -
bmsd command line option to populate the
[SysprepMassStorage] section.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe the answer lies in "(different makes and models)" = different
hardware; your image has the incorrect device drivers for the hardware
you're trying to install it on. I'm surprised it worked on any of them
that were different. The same thing would happen if you took the hard
drive from the original machine and tried to boot it in one of the other
machines.

That is what sysprep is for - it preps the master machine
prior to imaging, removing specialty drivers, SID, etc so
that the image can be blown down to varying machines.
Sysprep allows you to note different storage controllers,
device drivers, etc. One of the main problems though is
that an image made on a machine with one type of HAL will
not work on a machine with a different HAL. I'm starting
to think that is my problem. Still inverstigating.

If you deploy a SysPrep image to machines with different
core components (Via, Intel & SiS) then after enumeration
be sure to go to Device Manager, Show Hidden Devices
and go through the Device tree and delete all the phantoms.
