SyncToy Suggestion

Hello,

I am a user and a fan of SyncToy (1.4). There is a problem I often run into.
Depending on the order in which I insert my thumb drives, their drive letter
assignments change (this also depends on the ports I use). This "breaks" the
folder pairs, since there is no way at all to change the folder paths. I
often end up deleting the pair, and then recreating it. It would be nice to
have a way of changing the paths in the future version.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that this issue is being addressed in SyncToy 2. I'm not
sure when it's going to be released, but according to a statement from one of
the developers a few months ago, it should be released pretty soon. I wish
they could give us an update. Anyway, in the meantime, you can press Start >
Run > type "diskmgmt.msc" > press Okay > find the USB drive > right-click it
choose to change the drive letter > follow the instructions to change the
drive letter to the one in the folder pair. Try funning a folder pair again;
it should work now.

You bet - SyncToy 2.0 Beta which was recently released for download from
Microsoft.Com/downloads fixes this. Please try it out and let us know how it
works out.

Yes, but SyncToy 2 is not a toy anymore but a big SQL monster. What I liked
about SyncToy 1 is how lightweight it was. Running SQL all the time bogs down
my laptop too much. I don't have spare 150Mb or RAM to give up just to run a
sync program.

Have you actually looked at the size of the install or the memory used by
the program. It is very comparable to what it used to be with SyncToy 1.4. We
don't use any server components with the new version - if you read the
install text carefully, whats being used is the SQL Compact Edition database
- which is a 2MB download, runs in-proc with SyncToy (i.e. no extra services,
etc), and its a lightweight compact db engine thats designed for desktop
applications. If you actually tried using the 2.0 Beta, you will find it to
be as fast and compact as the previous version of SyncToy with a bunch of new
features and improvements.

My apologies. I was thinking of SQL Express Edition (which was a hog on my
comp). Didn't realize there was this flavor too. Thanks for clarifying. I was
dissapointed for nothing :)
