Synchronizing Desktop Outlook 2002 & Laptop Outlook 2003

I have a Windows XP laptop running Outlook 2003 and a Windows XP desktop
running Outlook 2002. Best case, I would like to keep these in synch
regarding emails and contacts(both machines having same emails/same
contacts.); worst case, I would like to transfer laptop emails I send/receive
while traveling to my desktop. I tried exporting and archiving an Outlook
..pst file from my laptop, but desktop (Outlook 2002) doesn't seem compatible
with laptop (2003).

Is there a best practice I'm not getting for synching up two machines so the
Outlook data is the same?

New PST files created in Outlook 2003 cannot be opened by Outlook 2002
because of the new Unicode encoding. This web site has put together
some useful links on how to use third party applications to share
Outlook profiles.
