Synaptics TouchPad polluted my registry...

M

Mood Indigo

Howdy, y'all; I mistakenly installed a Synaptics TouchPad driver in a
Toshiba notebook computer that is actually configured with an Alps parts.
Oops. Unfortunately, the Synaptics driver did not uninstall correctly. Two
iterations of clicking "Remove" were required to delete the files, but there
are still lots of residual registry entries created by the driver, and the
driver folders and files were not removed. Sigh; don't they test this stuff?
I've already wasted several days on this already.

Anyway, every time I reboot, WinXPPro tries to install a "PS/2" pointing
device (I think that a pseudo-PS/2 mouse is created by the driver). I
"Uninstall" the device using Device Manager, but it just won't go away.
System Information shows it as a "Problem Device" (duh, yeah!), and it seems
to be enumerated as a PCI-connected device. Is it possible to use the .INF
script to figger out what the installation program put into the registry in
order to remove the unwanted entries without making a mess? Any other
techniques to repair the registry? I don't wanna hafta reinstall the O/S.
E-mail requests to Synaptics for help have been futile so far.

TIA,

André.
