Symbol Font Change - PowerPoint2003

Help!!!
We have a corporate template, setup to use Arial.
When I insert symbols, the font changes to
MS PGothic. When I try to change the font it says
"You have selected a single byte font to replace a
double byte font; please select a double byte font."
I need Arial
 
Insert -- Symbol -- Select "degree" symbol.
It seems to work find in PP2007
 
When you're in the Symbol dialog box, choose Arial from the font dropdown at
the top. Does that degree symbol work for you?
 
Yes I select Arial in the Symbol dialog box however,
no matter what I do MS PGothic is the font the
symbol insert as, any symbol.

This is baffing.
