Compatibility issues with PowerPoint 2003

I am unable to open my older versions (Office 200) of my PP files using
PP32003 version. It appears as if the fonts are not being recognized and are
freezing-up my system. I have tried to repalce all the fonts to Arial but
cannot seem to change " Arial Unicode MS" as I continue to get an error
messagage stating "You selected a single-byte font to replace a double-byte
font Please select a double byte font"

I do not know which fonts are which? I am stuck as my PPT files only open
as Read only unmodifiable presentation>

Please help

Have a look here:

PowerPoint opens presentations as Read-Only, won't allow editing when fonts
embedded
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00637.htm

Key points:

Open the presentation, choose Format, Replace Fonts and look at the UPPER list
box

The fonts with a ? next to them are fonts that are used by the presentation but
not installed on your computer. These will cause other fonts to be substituted
for them but won't cause the read-only problem.

The fonts with a small TT icon next to them are the ones that are embedded and
are the source of the problem. If you have the fonts available, install them.
That'll solve the problem.

If you don't have them available, use Help, Check for Updates. Let it update
PPT to the latest service pack level. This will include a patch that lets you
substitute fonts on your system for embedded fonts.

The only remaining hitch might be that the embedded font IS a double byte font.
In that case, you may need to substitute a different double byte font or install
Arial Unicode (I think this is available via Office Setup and choosing the
"Universal font" option.
