Switching Users

When switching users or logging off and on again as another user, the system
locks up when trying to get back to the original user or sometimes when
leaving the last user. I suspect this is because there is too much open in
the last users account. Does this mean when switching users one has to close
all the applications? I thought that was the point of switch users in that
you could keep open the applications.

How well "switch users" works depends on how much memory/virtual memory is
needed and it can also depend on the programs involved. Most will slip into
the background when idle and not cause a large load. However, if they
maintain an active presence this "weight" will be added to the next user's
session. The answer is that you shouldn't have to end all programs but you
may need to end some before switching.
