Switching internet connections now requiring reboot

I can't determine exactly when this started to happen, but now the only way I
can switch between two internet connections is by rebooting.

I have a manual switch between the two, and previously all I had to do after
switching was an "IPCONFIG RELEASE" followed by a "IPCONFIG RENEW" and the
new connection was recognized.

Now there is no connection to the internet even though the release/renew
"does" show the new IP address selected.

If I manually switch and then reboot it works as it should.

Is there some additional command that needs to be executed now in addition
to the release/renew sequence?

Thanks

OK, I did some more research in the MS KB area and found an old item that
sounds a lot like what I am experiencing. It was identified as a timing
problem, and I believe it originated in 2003.

The article said there was a hotfix available on request, and inferred that
it would eventually be included in a regular set of updates. But that was a
long time ago, and I am just now seeing the problem.

The article also mentioned a workaround; namely, after doing the "ipconfig
/release" and "ipconfig /renew" sequence, Windows Messenger should be stopped
and restarted.

I don't normally keep Messenger running, so i made my switch and then
started Messenger. As promised, the new connection was made correctly, and I
stopped Messenger.

But here's the odd part: I was able to switch back and forth a couple of
times and each time now, the new connection worked "without" having to do
anything with Messenger again.

Very strange!
