Switching Explorer left pane from Folders to Favorites crashes Explorer

I have seen this problem on 3 different XP machines. Two were brand
new... one was an IBM Thinkpad T40, and one a Dell Inspiron 8600.
Brand new, fresh out of the box, before ANYTHING was done to these
machines other than turn them on...

Here's what happens:
If I open Explorer, click the Favorites toolbar button to show
Favorites in the left pane, then go to View/Explorer Bar/Folders to
instead show Folders in the left pane... the whole Explorer window
disappears without a trace. No error message. It just closes. Any
attempt to switch from Folders to Favorites or Favorites to Folders
(either way) in the left pane causes the same crash with no error
message. I can start Explorer again and it will open fine, but the
same thing will happen again and again. These are brand new machines.
Not a stitch of user software installed, and not a byte of data off
the internet. What is wrong??

I tried all the updates for XP and Explorer. No joy.

If you have an XP machine, please try what I described. If it happens
to you, please post a note. If you can help, PLEASE PLEASE post a
note.

Plus there is no Favourites toolbar button by default. Therefore one would use the toolbar to switch to folders and menu to switch to favourites. This applies if using Explorer or Internet Explorer for file browsing.

It is the exact opposite of what the person describes.

I want to say that there is, but my systems are so far from default, I can't
bank on this......

In XP Folders and Search are the only toolbar buttons shown by default. In ME it was History, Folders, and Search. In 98 I think Favourites was on by default.

Will trust you on this, David, for now as I have X-CRS. But I still have to
squander, rectify and verify soon. <w>

I am the original poster of this thread...

I know the problem does not happen to everyone.
That's why it is such a conundrum. But there are
other people also posting about this exact same
problem...

The issue is happening whenever switching from Favorites
to Folders, or vice versa, using either toolbar buttons
or the menu choices under View/Explorer Bar. I doesn't
matter which buttons are currently visible on the toolbar.

We would deeply appreciate speculation, wild guesses,
or simple hunches as to what to look for or what to do.

Well it does matter because you describe steps that are normally not possible to follow. So is this related, not related, you described it in reverse, or do you just customise your toolbars.

Hi there,

glad to find somebody who has the same problem as i do :)
When i open Windows Explorer with 'C:> explorer.exe' (left pane showing
folder structure) and try to switch into Favorites view explorer.exe
crashes.

When i run 'explorer.exe c:' (no left pane) i can switch to Favorites
view. But when i then switch to Folder view explorer crashes again.

I would love to send more detailed debugging information. Could anybody
give me a hint how to produce such information. Where is good old dr.watson?

Kind regards,

Oliver
