Swapping internal modems...

Any hints on what to look out for when swapping internal modems?

I plan to...

1> power off
2> remove the existing modem
3> power on
4> power off
5> install the new modem
6> power on

Hopefully, XP will recognize the new modem and will come up without a hitch.
Actually, it's a not-so-new USR about 6 years old - previously used on a Win98
machine. I'm swapping because the modem that came with my 2 year old Dell (I
think it's Lucent Win Modem) gets terrible connections (21.6). The USR used to
get 33.6 on a regular basis. When I first got the Dell I tried working with
Dell Support to fix the problem ... without any luck. My laptop on the same
line gets at least 26.4.

Will I have to re-enter all my dial-up network connections?

Hi Dennis,
I plan to...

<insert>

Open Device Manager from System properties, expand the modem branch.
Right-click the current modem, uninstall it. Proceed to....
1> power off

Doing the above should help you to retain your current dial-up settings,
though you may need to reset the default modem in the connection properties.

Thanks!

I'll probably go in and jot down a few important settings like IRQ, I/O
addresses, etc. before starting ... just to be on the safe side.

I'll set a restore point also, though I don't know if it will help when
hardware changes are involved. But it can't hurt.
