Swap out Maxtor circuit boards?

On XP boot-up, I get blue screen
and "unmountable_boot_volume" error. Maxtor diagnostics
says the drive is bad.

Can I merely swap the circuit board with a good one from
the exact same model drive and it's good to go? Is there
any info "stored" on any chip on the replacement board
that will mess up data on my original drive?

Although I have done that in sopme cases with the exact same drives (it
won;t harm the data if they are the same) - you void the warranty you likely
have on both drives. Also, no guarantee it will work, because most drives
go bad internally, not the circuit board.
