"svchost.exe generated errors"

I have continuous problem with "svchost.exe generated
errors" mostly while I am surfing the Internet. It does
not allow me to open data files.
This is in spite of updating WIndows2000 with Service Pack
4. MS Knowledge Base Article 319161 suggests changing the
Registry Editor so that in Location subkey there would be
Location0 and Location1and eliminating Locations 3 and 4.
But I have only Location1. Can that be the problem? Should
I add Location0?
