When I first turn on my computer the following message appears:
"Svchost.exe Application Error. Instruction at oX77308F01 referenced memory
at 0X3003054. Memory could not be written. Ok to terminate or cancel to
debug."

I always cancel and re-start my computer as I do not understand all this.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong please? (I only have a very basic
understanding of computers ... I can turn them on and off but that is it!)

I have a 15 month old Dell 4600c with Windows XP Home Edition with all
latest updates and drivers. Software includes MS Office, AVG anti-virus, MS
anti-spyware.

this could be so many different things. svchost.exe is used to run dll's as
processes. This means that there are alot of third-party applications that
could be causing the problem. Unfortunatly, the problem is probably windows,
I suggest writing to microsoft and demanding your money back.

If what the other guys have said do not work, you may need to repair windows.
What is happening may also be a program conflict (which starts up with the
computer). Here atre the two solutions

MSCONFIG

http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmb_tol_dxth.asp
This explains all details of how to use the utility.

In brief what you will need to do is go to the start menu then go to the run
command box. Once there type “msconfigâ€. This will bring up the Microsoft
Configuration Utility. Once in it there are two options.

1. If you believe you know what is causing the problem go through to the
services tab. Click on the hide all Microsoft services tab. Then go through
the list and untick what you think is causing you problems. Be careful, but
do not worry. If you untick a vital services MS will automatically retick it
on restart. Next go to the startup tab. Untick everything that you think may
be causing you the problem and then apply your changes, and restart your
computer to see if you are still experiencing the problem.
2. If number one does not work or you do not know what is causing the
problem do the following. In the Microsoft Configuration Utility’s welcome
screen, click diagnostic startup. Restart the computer. Do you have the same
problem? If so then use system restore (located in the start menu’s
accessories tab) to undo the msconfig change. If it has it is now your job to
find what was causing the problem. So to the services tab. Click on the hide
all Microsoft services tab. Then go through the list and retick 5 services
(at a time i.e. between each restart) and find what you think is causing your
problems. Be careful, but do not worry. If you untick a vital services MS
will automatically retick it on restart. Next go to the startup tab. Retick 5
programs (at a time i.e. between each restart) and find what you think is
causing your problems. Then apply your changes, and restart your computer to
see if you are still experiencing the problem.

THE REPAIR CONSOLE

This method will reinstall Windows XP, and delete all drivers and windows
updates, BUT IT WILL NOT DELETE YOUR PROGRAMS OR FILES!

To use it you need to insert your Windows XP CD, and then restart your
computer. Then when the boot screen comes up, click ‘boot from cd’ and once
the XP cd has loaded, select the repair console.

Here are some websites that describe the process
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/EN-US/ Please not this is very detailed
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm this is quite a good
step by step guide which I recommend printing off and looking at while doing
your first repair

Do not worry. Repairs are very easy, but afterwards you will need to
reinstall drivers, and run Windows Update.

I hpe that helps

Cheers

Quintin

Many thanks - I was worried something was wrong with the actual computer but
I am hoping it is something I can put right by your suggestions.

thankyou again.

Elaine, if you boot into safe mode does this happen? To get into safe
mode turn on or if logged in, restart the computer. Just as the first
BIOS screen disappears start tapping the F8 key until you get a menu
that has several options, one of them is safe mode. Choose this. If
the computer boots into safe mode w/o any problems then it means
something is loading on a normal boot up that is causing the problem.

The first thing to do is a thorough scan for malware. I know you have
AVG and MS anti-spyware but that's not enough. No one or two programs
catches it all. Also have you been running regular scans in safe mode?
All scans for malware should be done in safe mode. Below I list some
programs to run to check for malware.

After doing a malware check if the problem still happens, the next thing
is to eliminate programs from starting up to see which one is causing
the error. It's called clean boot troubleshooting. Here are some links
on how to do that:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP

After you have done these things post back with the results.

For viruses, start with Trend Micro’s Sysclean and McAfee’s Stinger.
Download them and the Sysclean signature file. Turn off system restore,
boot into safe mode and run them. Boot back into normal mode and run a
full AV scan with your normal AV program. Then turn system restore back
on.

McAfee AVert Stinger Virus Removal Tool

Run these programs to check for spyware/malware. After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should update
and run them weekly.
