Svchost crashes after XP-SP2 - help diagnose...

Folks

I'm having a recurrent problem with svchost.exe crashing at startup
after applying XP SP2.

More precisely one instance of svchost.exe tries to write to memory
address 0, typically using a null pointer.

Now the question is: how would I diagnose which service is the actual
culprit ?! I'm pretty proficient with Sysinternals tools such as
ProcessExplorer but as far as I can tell the crash occurs in the
startup process.

Any suggestion welcome

Click on start--run --msconfig--click on services tab at the top.Put the
check mark on hide microsoft services and than the services you get in white
screen uncheck them.Than see you face the same problem or not it not than
start checking services one by one and find the culprit.

Ouch.... I was hoping for something less painfull...

I too am having this problem and am furiously trying to find out what
the problem is.

I tried your suggestion, disabled all the non-Microsoft services, and
yet still get the error.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with built in wireless and bluetooth.

Sometims after I get this error on startup windows does not apply the
"cutesy" XP theme.

Very often the firewall service does not start and I get an error
(just saying it is unable to start the service) when I try to start
the security service in the Security Center.

Any help would be greatly received.

Well, I seem to have nailed my problem.

I had the Dell WLAN Utility set to manage the wireless connections on
my laptop. On a hunch, I disabled this, so that Windows was in charge
of configuring teh wireless connections. Et Voila.... everything
started to work and I didn't get the services crashes any more.

Good luck to everyone else, I hope this helps others!
