SVCHOST failure at XP startup

A couple days ago one of my XP machines failed to complete startup. After
the window user/pwd was typed in the system hung.

No desktop icons, startup menu, etc. No difference in safe mode.

MS XP SP2: v 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1579: Service Pack 2)

You can start some programs/tasks through the task dialog. You can access
the desktop (popup menu->properties for instance), you can open a command
window (harddrive, filesystem, OS, etc appear fine), System Restore will not
work (as it depends on SVCHOST). Anything dependent on SVCHOST will fail to
start.

Normally McAfee Internet Security Suite is running (firewall, virus scan,
etc), latest support uptodate. (so virus may be possible but not yet
considered)

The error is "COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during is
internal process. HRESULT was 800706BA from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp.
Fault application MKSrvr.exe, v7.0.1.3; fault module Kernel32.dll
v5.1.2600.2495; fault address 0x00012a5b. (from the Event Viewer)

No desktop icons, startup menu, etc.

This behavior can occur if the Windows settings for a particular user
account are corrupted.

See this...

Taskbar Is Missing When You Log On to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318027

Try logging on as a different User or create a new User Account.

COM+ Event System detected a bad return code...

EventSystem Event ID 4609. Can happen because the COM+ Event System service
is disabled.

Also see this...

This behavior may also occur if the Windows XP system files are damaged.

Might be time for a Repair Install or a complete reinstall.
