SVCHOST and "network service" in XP?

I run WinXP Pro on a standalone PC connected to the net by cable
but not part of any other network.

In Task Manager I have a process called SVCHOST and its user name
is NETWORK SERVICE.

I am showing processes from all users and this entry is the only
one for NETWORK SERVICE.

Should it be there?

Am I running an unnecessary service?
