Immediately after booting my XP Pro system I can see in task Manager
that there are four inctances of SVCHOST running.

Two are SYSTEM, one is LOCAL SERVICE and another is NETWORK SERVICE.

My PC is standalone and connects to the Net via cable. I do not have
any requirement to network with any other PC.

While SVCHOST runs as a NETWORK SERVICE my browser can not connect.
When I cancel SVCHOST as a NETWORK SERVICE then my browser can
connect.

How do I disable SVCHOST from running as a NETWORK SERVICE?

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Do the scan
in Safe Mode.
