suppressing page breaks before subdocuments

Microsoft's Help states the following: "Microsoft Word inserts a next page
section break before the subdocument and a continuous section break after it."

Is there any way to suppress the next page section break before the
subdocument? I have a master document which I want to link to subdocuments
that are sometimes only one paragraph long. I don't want page breaks before
the subdocuments (i.e., paragraphs). I may have multiple subdocuments that I
want to appear on one page of the master -- without a forced page break. Is
there a way to do this?
