Sun Java Program Needed for Backup Program

S

Sam

I would like to use a backup program (AKGBackup) to backup my data files.
Unfortunately it requires that the Sun Java Runtime Environment program be
installed on my computer. I already have the MS Java program (Version
5.00.3810) installed on my computer. I should note that I have a Dell
Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro installed.

I went to the Sun Java site (http://java.com/en/index.jsp) and it appears
(assuming that I identified the correct file to download) that the file size
would be approximately 85MBs!! I would appreciate any help with the
following questions:
a. Can the Sun Java and the MS Java programs co-exist on the same
computer?
b. Does the Sun Java program have a history of noticeable operational
problem, so that maybe I should forget installing the desired backup
program?
c. Since my internet connection is a dialup thru MSN, a download is
pretty much out of the question for me. Any suggestions as to how I might
be able to obtain the Sun Java file on a CD media?
d. How can I find out the name of the correct Sun Java file to download
for my computer (I am thinking about paying someone with a DSL or Cable to
download the file for me)?

Thanks for any help, Sam.

You don't need anything besides this java package. It's around 11-14MB :

Download J2SE v 1.4.2_03
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

The 2 java versions can "coexist". You'll have to use the in-program
update feature for Sun's Java Plug-in in the Control Panel. Also, reduce
the size of the Cache down to 10MB. It's default setting is way too large.
Sun developed java and it is reliable. Just be aware that they will be
the ones supplying any security updates for it.

That is the wrong download (I would think that is a download that includes the
development kit).

The download should be approximately 15 MB.

At http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
select the download marked as "Windows (Offline Installation)" to get the file
with the name j2re-1_4_2_03-windows-i586-p.exe

Yes.

Not as far as I know.

Many thanks for your Quick reply!! The 11 to 14MB size is one that I
should be able to download without difficulty. Thanks again for the
information, Sam.

I have been using this program (AKGBackup) for some time now, and I
think it is one of the best backup programs available today. Of
course, downloading JRE and setting it up may seem like a hassle, but
once done it makes the backup jobs a snap.

I must say, however, that the sun site doesn't at all look intuitive
to use. It is they who make downloading it difficult.
