Hi
My daughter wants to purchase an A3 Inkjet printer
Any recommendations that don't cost the earth
She has a Canon 1P4000, but it's starting to give probs and she would
like an A3 to print fotos,
but would still want to be able to print DVDs/CDs etc

I use an Epson 1290s. It prints up to A3+ and the quality is good for the
price - around £250. I also use non-Epson ink at £30 for 10 black + 10
colour cartridges. I like to print and it's important to me that the costs
are not huge. I accept that a dearer printer with Epson ink will produce a
bit better print but I find the 1290 an excellent compromise when cost is
important.

Having said that, I have just printed a photograph on A3 Jessops glossy
paper and I am very pleased with the result. Better than many of the prints
I have seen in exhibitions. I expect the lifetime of prints from cheap ink
to be short - but who cares if they are one offs for a competition or short
exhibition.

It won't print DVDs - I have an R200 that will do that.

Firstly, you may wish to talk to canon technical support regarding the
ip4000. They give out replacement heads like hotcakes even in some
cases where the warranty expired, even UK.

I do not know the going rate for the earth in the UK. The sugestion by
Eatmorepies is wise, an Epson 1290s and a seperate printer dedicated to
printing cds should be able to be had for the 350 quid price mark more
or less.

If you want a3 and CD printing, your options are very limited. The
canon i9950 will do this, but these are getting harder to find. The
replacement the pixma pro 9000 will do this, but does not exist yet,
and share the same specs as the i9950 except for newer ink, newer
driver, and jazzy new chassie. Expect to shell out under 400 quid, 350
on a good day. If aftermarket cartridges are your bag, buy the i9950
now.

Your only other option in a3+ and cd printing is the Epson r1800. Also
under 400 quid though it seems more likely to find under 350quid than
the canon ip9950. It's pigment ink, which will last an absolute age.
But it's more prone to clog than dye, which can be resolved with work.
There are aftermarket cartridges for this as well.

But keep in mind that cd printing is a tad more rough on printers than
paper. So it would not be unwise getting a seperate cd printer and a
decent a3 printer.

I would be inclined to remain with Canon, try the new iX4000 or iX5000 A3
format printers.
You should find that they are reasonably priced.
