What's Up!!!!.
It depend on how much Disk space you have and what your Surfing habits are?.
You will get lots of opinions from MVPs or Non-MVPs each will recommend a
Program, so how that will help you!!!. ONLY get you to a confusion!!!.
Best outside there to my Knowledge are:
Free
Avast
AVG
Avira
BIT Defender

Those are only AV not a complete Security suite, you will need a Firewall
with any of them to be secure from hacker and other malicious attacks, like:
ZA
Comodo
Kerio

Commercial (in Alphabet order):

Avast
AVG
Bit Defender
CA
F-secure
Kaspersky
Mcafee
Norton
Panda
Sophos
Trend Micro
etc...

Again, all of these will not help if you don't practice safe Hex with common
sense in dealing with security on your System.

An MVP is a Microsoft, Most Valued Professional.

I was going to answer the OP's question but he wanted an answer from an MVP
only...
so I guess I will not offer my advice.
I am both a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher and have also had 32 years
experience as a (now) Senior Service Engineer...
but am not an MVP.
I think it interesting to note that I don't think even Bill Gates is an
MVP...
Oh well. <G>

1. I recommend Avast!

2. It is foolish of you to limit your request to MVPs only. MVPs are
individuals. As individuals, we each have our own strengths and
weaknesses and our different opinions. I like Avast!; other MVPs will
have different preferences. There are lots of other folks here who are
not MVPs who also have excellent knowledge and opinions. Every MVP was
once not an MVP, and none of us suddenly knew everything the day we
got the title.

And he can't be an MVP under the current rules, just like other
Microsoft employees can not.
It is one or the other, not both.
When an MVP becomes a Microsoft employee, they are no longer an MVP.

No Microsoft employee is an MVP. If an MVP is hired by Microsoft, he
loses his MVP status.

Excuse me, but this is my first time on ANY type of discussion. So, I have no
answer, just another question. No one has recommended "Windows Live One
Care". I purchased that program, but have not installed it yet. Is there a
problem with it?

Yes , that was previously answered by another respondent
anyway I was just making a little joke...

BTW: I read your other reply about the Avast suggestion and have used that
myself...
also have used AVG. Found both of them to be very good *free* virus
checkers...and better actually than a few commercial products.

I get a lot of machines in for repair that have had updated versions of the
"big name" virus checkers...and have seen them pretty badly infected.
the free AV apps usually find (and repair) a *lot* of stuff that was missed!
Amazing!

Why would any sane person do that?

I don't think Bill Gates is a Microsoft employee (any longer).

Because you have never posted before you are excused of course...

I don't know if "problem" is the right word, but I think it's not one
of the better choices.

Here is a good review:

http://www.anti-malware-test.com/?q=taxonomy/term/16

You should be okay if you go with the top rated (gold)
or the middle rated (Silver)

Stay away from the "Failed" group, especially
OneCare

HTH,
-T

Top (Gold): Kaspersky

Failed:
Avast! Professional Edition 4.7 (33%)
Avira Premium Security Suite 7.0 (33%)
Sophos Anti-Virus 6.0 (33%)
DrWeb 4.44 (32%)
Microsoft Windows Live OneCare 1.6 (32%)
BitDefender Internet Security 10 (30%)

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will responses.

I'll start by saying that I don't think any security "suite" is a
good choice. It'd be better to use smaller, less-resource-draining
stand-alone products. And, having had personal experience with
Verizon's business practices, I certainly wouldn't trust anything they
offer. Even if the product/service itself is fine, there'll be hidden
costs and "unadvertised" conditions and limitations associated with it.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without
any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's
been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their
quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by
Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ). It proved
to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally,
I was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable
improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec
product. Another free (for personal use) anti-virus product is AVAST! 4
Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is what
I'm currently using without problems on Vista Business.

Well, it includes/recommends a registry "cleaner," which is nothing but
pure snake oil. This makes me suspect the overall quality and
worthiness of the product. Additionally, relying solely upon Microsoft
to plug holes in a Microsoft OS strikes me as too much like having the
fox guard the hen-house.

Anti-virus = AVG or Avast if you want 'free', NOD32 if you don't mind
paying..

The Vista firewall is good, but if you like spurious messages popping up,
Comodo Firewall is free and good..

Windows Defender, Hostsman and WinPatrol can be had for free, but there is a
paid version of WinPatrol too.

I use NOD32, Vista firewall (also behind a router), Windows Defender,
Hostsman and WinPatrol Pro.

Avoid Norton 'Anything' and McAfee 'Anything', or any other security suite.
