I btw have anti-virus n360 setup.

Can everyone just LISTEN!!!

I thought my solution, if it worked on GMAIL, would work for all email
providers, but clearly not so.

So, if you have GMAIL, and you've set up Windows Mail like I suggested, and
it works, then I would like to see replies from you.

My Gmail works using the standard
POP3: port 995
SMTP: port 465

but I see where 587 can be used for SMTP now.

Keep on using it. It often takes months for it to cause problems in
Windows Mail, but when it does, you'll definitely notice them.

Using port 587 for Gmail is about as obsolete as your advice is.
Gmail has recommend port 465 for sending for a long time already:
