Suffering from sending mail from Windows Mail?? Your prayers answe

Reasons for not being able to send mail outbound using Windows Mail:

Some say "Windows Mail is not compatible with most
McAfee and Norton antivirus programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, NOT just disabled." - Huh?!?!?

Others say "it sounds like interference from a spyware/spamware
program" - what nonsense!!!

It seems for Microsoft it was the best of times, it was the worst of times
when they launched Windows Vista.

Everyone seems to have got some parts of this problem knocked on the head,
but not quite...

The ULTIMATE solution is as follows:

You need to go to TOOLS | ACCOUNTS | Your Email Account
| Servers Tab | click the "My server requires authentication"
and select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server".

Then go to the Advanced Tab, set the port number in the Outgoing mail
(SMTP): to 587.

That should be it..

....and take comfort in the fact that i am watching...

Thank you for your April 1 contribution. :) We all enjoyed it. Now back
to serious work.

Authentication and port 587 only works IF your email provider has a server
set up to use those settings. Mine doesn't, and most don't.
One size does not fit all.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not an April Fool's (if that's what you
mean't...but if you didn't mean that, then what did you mean). You must
BELIEVE ME...this solution works...Try it...

Oh, now we do have a problem. I apologize. Well, if you have been around
this board for any period of time you would have observed that all the cases
that you have sighted have been proven positive. Anyone, or all of them,
can and have caused Email to not operate properly. The configuration
process turns out to be quit complex and people on this board have spent an
in ordinal amount of time and patience, not to say, facing lots of user
frustration, trying to find the reason(s) why their Email didn't come up
cleanly. There is no simply (ULTIMATE) solution. Actually, I take that
back, there is a simple solution but it's always different, and hard to
find. The error messages help point the way. But your solutions at the
bottom don't always work. Not all providers require or will accept these
settings. So, please just sit back and watch the MVPs and MVP "helpers" do
their work. You will see a lot of common stuff (routine). You will also
see solutions that vary by Mail Service Provider.

D

Dave

Well, that certainly would simplify things, if everyone used the same email
provider.

A "one solution fits all problems"? Not likely!
Leave troubleshooting to the seasoned experts who have been
doing this for a long time.

That should do it for some email providers, but email providers
aren't all alike in which of the approximately 65,000 ports
they'll let you use in connecting.

I had e-mail service for 2 hours yesterday jut after I got my new computer -
today I cannot send or receive - I spent 4 hours on the phone with Comcast
today - they finally gave up said it was a Microsoft problem - they took me
through all of the steps as suggested by the "H" at leat six times - no luck
- so thanks to this wonderful Windows mail innovation, I am now totally
without e-mail capability, (except for posting on this info site). I have no
idea where to go next.

I see that on some of the comments, it is desireable to know the error
message. All of today, I did not get an error message, but as of a few
minutes ago, I received the following:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'mail.comcast.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

ok, if you have been following the group you should know the drill...please
cut and paste your error message to this group.

Despite what "The 'H'" said, it could very well be your anti-virus,
anti-spamware or anti-spyware software interfering.

Try turning them off one at a time, and try checking your email.

I tried what you said and still cannot get my retrieve my email. The
bellsouth guy says the SMTP outgoing port should be set on 25, but
that doesn't work either. LINDA ---
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

Well, I did paste the error message on my second posting - maybe I'm doing
something wrong - I aapologize if I am, but I will paste it again - the
searcing for a potential answere is almost as bad as the original problem!!!
Foe me anyway - I'm a novice and very fast I seem to be slinking into an
opposite direction!! Here is the error message ---- Your server has

Try removing your email account under Windows Mail, then restarting
Windows Mail, then using these instructions to add the account again:

You have the SSL option enabled. Comcast does not use SSL.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select the Comcast mail account, Properties,
Advanced. Remove any checkmarks from the SSL option ( 2 places).
If you get a new error message, post it, because there may be multiple
things wrong.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Can everyone just LISTEN!!!

I thought my solution, if it worked on GMAIL, would work for all email
providers, but clearly not so.

So, if you have GMAIL, and you've set up Windows Mail like I suggested, and
it works, then I would like to see replies from you.

Thankyou!
