Suddenly slow

A few days ago I noticed something changed on my computer. Whenever I click
START and choose a PROGRAM, there is a 30 to 180 second delay before the
program loads. This happens with Spider Solitaire, Internent Explorer,
Outlook 2003, Windows Explorer, Notepad, you name it. I can also experience
this if I open a program on the Quick Launch task bar or desktop.

While the computer slows down, you can slowly move the mouse back into play
within 2 to 5 seconds and work within an already open program while waiting
for the new program to load. During this time I can not open START or any
other program on my desktop. I have also noticed that sometimes I can see
the program in the Task manager process window. In all cases, the program
finally loads.

Hardware: Toshiba Protege', Intel Core2Duo, 2GB memory, 100GB hard drive
(75 free).

Third Party Software installed: GotomyPC, Symantec Client Security 3.1x,
all the latest patches and updates from both Microsoft and Smantec. (I do
not use other third party applications that interface with my OS, I don't
believe in them).

Unit is a member in a local DOMAIN. DNS points to the server's IP address.

So far I have run DEFRAG, CHKDSK on reboot, Disk Cleanup, checked task
manager for processes and memory, disk and page file usage. I've scanned for
viruses. I have turn on/off the Client Security Firewall. Disabled all the
NIC devices. I have also started the computer up in DIAGNOSTICS mode by
running MSCONFIG. I have restored SYSTEM RESTORES from previous periods
prior to this problem. I have read articles on the internet from Google,
this group and other organizations. I have run hardware diagnostics both
from within Windows and on boot up without an OS.

Task Manager shows nothing out of the ordinary. System Idle Process is
usually 97 - 99%. Use less than 40% of physical memory. Page File and CPU
barely shows any usage. In other words, I do not see anything out of the
ordinary.

1. Any other ideas not listed on this bullentin board?
2. Should I go ahead and try to upgrade this to Vista in the hope that it
is an OS issue?

Thank you in advance.

Please provide copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the time when the
problem occurs. No Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

I am sorry it took so long to reply. I wanted to figure it out myself. What
I do know is that it has something to do with being a member of the domain.
Over the weekend I left the domain and the computer works quite well. When I
rejoin the domain I began to get the degradation again.

Thank you for takng the time to answer this.

Event ID: 11163
Date: 3/9/2007
Time: 23:36:52

Description:
The system failed to register host (A) resource records (RRs) for network
adapter
with settings:

Adapter Name : {CA0BBDB4-7B05-4FDD-B679-23EF78E2BC88}
Host Name : toshiba-user
Primary Domain Suffix : tsgroup.local
DNS server list :
192.168.9.1
Sent update to server : 192.1.1.1
IP Address(es) :
192.168.9.112

The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS
server failed the update request. The most likely cause of this is that the
authoritative DNS server required to process this update request has a lock
in place on the zone, probably because a zone transfer is in progress.

You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its
settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems
still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
