Suddenly I have Defender icon in tray but...

Scan takes place at odd hours even though it's set for 2 AM (just had an
auto scan that I stopped (6:10 PM).

Now if I try to close (exit) the Defender icon, it tells me I won't be
notified when unwanted software tries to run.

Has there been an upgrade in the last day that puts the icon in the tray?

No. AS far as I know, there has not been such an update. What does the icon
in the system tray look like? What happens if you use it to open, rather
than to exit? And what other anti-spyware and anti-virus programs as you
using.

I just used the Help>about>update on the Defender toolbar to initiate a
search for updates. The icon appears when I do that, while Defender begins to
search for updates. It reappeared with the message that no updates were
found. I quickly right clicked on the icon and chose exit, and got that same
message that you got. I believe it may have been checking for updates when
you saw the icon in the system tray. That message seems like an old message
from MSAS beta 1, because Defender should be set to protect unless you change
that in General Settings. This sounds like some kind of bug in the tray icon.
I hope one of the Microsoft folks read this thread and provide an
explanation. Normally, a Defender icon with a check mark on it (instead of a
question mark) will disappear by itself if just ignored.

The tray icon only shows up in the instances where there is information to
be provided. Protection is always on unless noted otherwise =)

If you select "Exit Windows Defender" similar to selecting the "Exit from
Windows Defender" from the dropdown next to the help icon, then it does
indeed shut down Defender. It should come back on the next reboot.

The icon in the tray will hide itself automatically after a certain amount
of time - no need to do anything.

We are also looking into allowing customers to override and show the icon at
all times if they want.

So there isn't a way to get the icon displayed all the time then? :(

The was gone from the tray when I rebooted.

How about looking into a program that scans every single CLSID and
registry item even if it takes 4 hours (to be done while we're away) and
includes every viral infection and malware intrusion/worm since the
beginning of Windows 95? It's impossible to surf the web without
intrusion. Doing a Google search, I find that even some tech sites are
just copies of usenet newsgroups and send questionable cookies.

The whole idea of the registry started what amounts to a bad GM engine
from the 1970's. There are all kinds of bugs and holes to plug in there
and a small malware program just won't do it. Microsoft should be
issuing the best free AV programs and anti-spyware known to the computer
industry. There's no reason why private software manufacturers should be
making fortunes because of an increasing computer infection problem.

Haven't you guys at Microsoft noticed that the tech forum and newsgroup
activity has increase greatly over the last several years with poor souls
posting their Hijackthis scans? Can't you at least create a program
similar to Hijackthis with an immediate respone when an automatic log is
created and sent?
