Suddenly cannot connect to Internet

IE6.0.2900.2180 with SP2 under WinXP with SP2 and latest upgrades, patches
and updates.
This is the primary PC on a Linksys wifi with only one networked laptop.

While trying to copy files from one HDD to another, switching secondary
drives and using usb external drives, I downloaded FreshUI with its 3
siblings, Diagnose, Download, and View. I used Fresh Diagnose (v7.46) to
look over my system and the various HDD's I was copying. While wandering
around I looked over my settings for IE6, but I don't recall making any
changes. Soon after that I realized I couldn't open any Internet pages -- I
only get the hourglass and a blank page. However, OE6 continues to retrieve
my email, but any liinks to Internet sites do not resolve -- I get the text
but not the pictures. URL links do not resolve, either.
I've checked my Tools>Internet Options but cannot find anything different
from previous settings.
Reloading IE6 from my Windows disc is complicated by the addition of the
SP's which make my disc nearly useless, and going to the Microsoft Support
site is, of course, impossible. Since FreshUI and its siblings each require
registration (somewhat silly, since it's free), I cannot start Fresh
Diagnose to see where I made any errors (there is a clue here, that the
initial registration was evidently sent to the Internet which allowed me to
use the program, but was not remembered via cookie or other means, requiring
me to re-register.)
I will remove all the Fresh program apps and see if that makes any
difference, but in the meantime I would appreciate any suggestions, help,
experience that any of you have to offer. Remember, I can't download IE7 at
this point.

System Restore initialization returns the error: "Run DLL as an APP" and
terminates.

Well you have your Restore points corrupted by somehow!.
Do you have avirus scanner on your computer?, if yes try to scan in both
Safe and Normal mode.
Also try to uninstall the new softwares installed and see if that will help.

This about System restore read the article:

Please let us know your result.

Thank you for your help!
Removing the Fresh - programs restored my Internet connectivity. It also
now allows me to run my always-present McAfee -- remember, I was able to
retrieve my emails while McAfee sat here semi-useless for a couple days.
I also have to check for corrupted files.
Thank you again.
