Cannot connect to Internet using IE6

Help! I cannot connect to internet using IE6. I can download email and use
FTP though. All other computers can connect to internet, but when I look at
lower left-hand corner it resolves DNS name and then just sits there until
finally it says "page cannot be displayed". I can ping and tracert to
msn.com, yahoo.com ect. from computer, but for some reason can not use web
browser. I have uninstalled and re-installed IE. I have even tried Firefox.

I really apprecate any help anyone can give me. I am pulling my hair out.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
You don't mention your Operating System (Windows version) so...

Any version of XP...
Open a Cmd window (or from Start> Run) enter
ipconfig /flushdns
Then restart.

If using Win XP SP2...
Log on as an administrator.
From Start> Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
netsh Winsock reset

Any version of XP- try this winsock repair tool:
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

For Win 9x:
LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html

Whether or not the Winsock repair tool(s) work...
You probably have a malware problem. Try CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot and
the
other programs listed and explained at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

and
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns
and maybe

Hope this helps,

Any version of XP- try this winsock repair tool:

Why do a winsock repair? If the winsock was broken he wouldn't be able to
download email, run FTP, or ping sites. All of those activities require TCP
packets, and a broken winsock would break all TCP/IP activity.

Weird - I have exactly the same issue - but only for "BIG" sites such as
ebay.co.uk - microsoft - etc (smaller sites are fine xe.com - numan.co.uk....
I dont have malware - I am behind a firewall - I am clean but VERY frustrated!

Hi,
There are other possible solutions at
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#dns and
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_5.htm#connect

Try disabling third-party security programs. One of them might be causing
this.

A repair/reinstall of IE may help:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#Reinstall

Aha!

I lowered my MTU settings on my home Netgear router (from 1458 to 1400) and
voila! I can now get to the web pages of my choice

Try it!
