Sudden shutting down

I am running xp pro on a new laptop and a few minutes into a new session on the computer, windows suddenly shuts down through its normal shut down option screen. Fire it all up again and it works fine until I turn it off for a while and then happens again next time I start. I would be grateful for anyone's advice
There is no error message coming up and nothing in Dr Watson. The C- drive does get checked every time it happens and finds nothing wrong.
