Windows shut down

My Windows XP Pro has suddenly stopped shutting down. It reaches the last
screen, "Windows is shutting down." but the computer never shuts off like it
use to. Anyone have an idea what the problem might be? The last time I seen
this I had to reload the operating system to get it back to normal. Lot of
work, so if anyone has a quick and easy solution please let me know.

No "Quick and Easy", but it's likely a process is refusing to terminate
and causing the shutdown process to stall. One fix is a Microsoft add
on Service called "User Profile Hive Cleanup". Specifically design to
help with shutdown ( User Hive ) it might help with your issue. Other
than trying that you may have to diagnose with System Event Log to
locate any errors. Many programs can cause shutdown issues but it's
doubtful that is your issue since it's just recently started.
User Profile Hive Cleanup found here:

Also if you've been using the PC power button or pulled the plug to
turn off the computer it's likely the disk drive is "Dirty". Once rebooted
you should do a Chkdsk C: to verify the drive's integrity.

firstly, you may avoid
reloading windows by
"repairing" it instead.

it is one of the options
provided by a windows
installation cd.

however, you might try
to tune up your computer
first to see if the problem
is due to poor user maintenance
and correct the likelihood of
overlooked issues without
repairing or reinstalling
the o.s.:

secondly, when windows
is shutting down, one of
the things it tries to do is
to turn off/power off some
of the devices.

so if for example, you have
a modem with an active internet
connection, then windows
would attempt to shut it off
before shutting itself down.

here is some general info:

as i mentioned, the above
is only one possibility.
