Sudden request for username & password

I am using Windows Mail on a Vista Ultimate system. My wife's and my mail
files have been active for a year through our local Road Runner provider
........... now suddenly today "Windows Security" is requiring that we provide
our usernames and passwords to be allowed to get to our mailboxes. Is this a
Windows mail issue or a Road Runner mailbox issue ??

The error message we're getting when we try to log in is

Account: 'John RR Mail', Server: 'pop-server.triad.rr.com', Protocol: POP3,
Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC17

Windows Mail often forgets the password if, for any reason, a logon
to that server fails to work. Also, a quirk in Windows Mail often
makes it forget the password if you click Apply in the same session
you put a checkmark before Remember password. To fix this, after
you find a working username and password, start Windows Mail,
then click Tools, then Accounts, then your email account, then
Properties, then Servers. If your username needs to be corrected,
click at the end of it, then backspace over it, then type the correct
username, then click Apply. To correct the password, click at the
end of the dots for it, then backspace over it, then type the correct
password, then click Apply. It may then ask you to confirm the
password; if it does, do this. Click OK, then Close.

Some email servers insist that you enter your username with
no spaces and no CAPITAL LETTERS. Some insist that
you follow it with the part of your email address starting
with @, and some insist that you don't. Many insist that you
use CAPITAL and lowercase letters in the correct places
in your password. Not all email providers are good at
keeping users about changes in these requirements.

You might also want to see if your account settings are
correct for your area of rr.com:

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not very
compatible with Windows Mail.
