sudden problem with CD-ROM device drivers

C

Chuck Green

My PC was on during a power outage, and upon return of
the power and booting of my machine, my two CD-ROM drives
both would not appear in explorer. In Device Manager,
they appeared and listed the same drivers they had, of
course, always used, but with yellow question marks and a
complaint:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.
The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Both drives will work with a Win98 Startup disk
(oakcdrom.sys), but in XP I cannot seem to force this
driver (and I'm not even sure this would work). I see
that others have had similar problems, so I hope that
perhaps there is a simple explanation. Any help would be
GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

At least it is comforting to know that otheres are having
this problem. I recently had Windows XP put in my
computer that was so corrupted that my files couldn't be
transferred. Now I too have an A drive, CD, and DVD that
are impaired. My CD drive will do audio CDs only.
Shouldn't Microsoft have some way to find a driver that
will work?
