Code 10 with my CD ROM

I have Vista Home Premium. Suddenly, I got code 10 and my CD ROM failed to
work. On the device manager, I got a yellow (!) opposite the software for the
CD. The driver is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA device and the specs.
indicate that Microsoft has the driver if I am interpreting it correctly. It
also says Standard CD ROM drives.

I have deleted the driver and upon rebooting, it tells me that the driver
installation failed. I can't seem to find a URL to get the driver and
manually install.

Any advice about code 10 and how I might successfully install the driver.
Many thanks. Norm.

Thanks, Peter. I have had a look at the website which is most interesting.
However, I have uninstalled the driver for the CD and on rebooting, it did
reinstall but the yellow (!) is still there. When I click on "update the
software", it tells me that I have the latest software - driver installed.

The CD is not external so is not using a USB port. I did take the CD player
out of the notebook and put it back in. It seems to be working - spinning OK
and tries to start but to no avail.

Still stumped. Norm.

Norm,

Have you installed any new software recently? I mention this because the
installation of Acronis Home 2009 caused a similar issue with USB drives on
many machines. I'm guessing other software/updates may do the same to
certain hardware under certain conditions.

Hi B,

No, I haven't installed any new software for quite some time. Only the usual
updates for Vista and MS Office that go through automatically. Thanks for
your thought. Norm.

Norm,

Just before you start removing 'upperfilters' and 'lowerfilter' as Peter has
suggested have you installed any software recently? I ask because I had a
code 10 problem (they are very difficult to troubleshoot) with my card
reader. It took 2 days to troubleshoot and I finally narrowed it down to a
copy of Acronis True Image 2009 I had, earlier in the day, installed. After
uninstalling this software everything went back to normal. Luckily Acronis
came up with a fix pretty quickly.

Code 10 may not always be hardware related always check software too,
especially if you notice the problem immediately after installing some
software.

Norm,

Maybe one of the updates? It happens once in a while.
Gets frustrating, doesn't it...........

Hi John,

The last software installed was the trial version of Expression Web about 30
days ago. (Have just bought EW the other day, but can't install because the
CD ROM is the code 10 problem).

A few days ago, I did remove upper and lower filters which allowed me to use
the CD. Then a couple of days ago, I turned on the notebook again and bang,
the CD was a code 10. BTW, I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 bought in March
2007 with Vista Home Premium as OEM. I forgot about the software installation
- I guess I have had a few updates automatically on Vista. Nothing else.

Thanks for your thoughts. I sure agree, it is a bummer to troubleshoot!

Norm.

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for the URL. This seems to have done the trick - hope it sticks.
Strange that the register needed editing but all seems well.

Thanks again. Norm.
