Sudden Failure to download photos through USB port

I was happily downloading Photo's direct from camera via a usb cable but had
a break of a couple of months and it no longer works. In cvase it was the
camera i purchased a USB card reader that also fails. I have tried on other
PC's and all is fine. Can anyone assist please?

You say it "fails" but you never tell us what actually
happens when you try!

How exactly does it fail? Error messages? What does or doesn't happen?
