subwoofer not working

I have a harman/kardon subwoofer (USB) that I cannot get to play
simultaneously with the computer speakers - the device is recognized, says
it's working & that the driver cannot be updated because the most current is
already installed. I'd assumed it was just plug & play (as the subwoofer
acted on my older computer), but I couldn't find anything useful in the
troubleshooting window - I can get the sound to go only through the
subwoofer, but that kills the computer speakers...

Make sure your setup of your desktop speakers are in accordance with the
brochure that came with the speakers so that they are properly connected
to each other, AND they are plugged into the speaker jack and not the
microphone jack which many people confuse. Check here for setup:
Start/Control Panle/Sounds and Audio/under Speaker Settings click the
Advance button/Speakers Setup. Click the down arrow to select desktop
speakers>Apply>OK
