substitute inf file ( printing issue )

R

Randy Layman

Good morning!

About one week ago I posted a problem with a HP6122
printing just fine when printing from the local WIN2000
system but only B/W when printing from the Terminal Server.

Patrick Rouse quickly responded that I should add a
specific line ( "HP DeskJet 6122" = "HP DeskJet 550C" )
in a substitute inf file. Sorry, not sure what that is!
I know what the ntprint.inf file is on the Terminal
Server. Any tips would be much appreciated.

It looks like I found the answer....but have one more
question....

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 239088 seems to do it.
I added the two registry entries, rebooted the server and
all is well in RDP-land! Naturally, I had to create
the 'substitue' inf file ( called it NTPrintsubs.inf ).
The actual file is as follows:

[Version]
Signature="$CHICAGO$"

[Printers]
"HP DeskJet 6122 Series" = "HP DeskJet 550C"

Patrick, if Iam having the same problem with Citrix
MetaFrame 1.8 would I simply add the two registry entires
as well - only under the 'ica' section instead of under
the 'rdp' section??? I ask because one of the VPs went
to a conference and several people were telling him about
Citrix ( he is one of those complaining loudest about the
color limitations with RDP ).

Thank you,

Randy

Well I'm glad it works for you. I'm confused about this question

It sounds like wondering about MF 1.8, but then you make it sound like a VP is interested in Citrix, giving me the impression that you're not running MF? Citrix MF 1.8 is a legacy product, so if you're looking to purchase Citrix you'd be looking at Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server w/ Feature Release . FR3 has a universal print driver that should eliminate many printing problems, but I wouldn't run out & purchase Citrix MF just for printing & increased screen color depth, as upgrading to Server 2003 is quite a bit less expensive

Do you currently run 1.8? (email me offine via my website along with your respose, as sometimes I don't see these posts for a day or so

Patrick,

Sorry that I confussed you. I was very unclear. We are
using Citrix MF 1.8 SP4 in this environment. I was able
to get this to work with RDP but not with Citrix ( but
that is more my ignorance as Citrix is not automatically
creating printers and I do not know how to add a printer -
as silly as that sounds! ). I will work on that today.

So, my question about the registry entry is indeed for
this envoronment.

Now, the confussion was from the fact that there is a
second client ( similar setup ) using TS with RDP. The
VP that I mentioned is from this second client. He is
the one who all of a sudden is interested ( after not
wanting to spend any money ). Sounds like WIN2003 is
possibly a better idea! My only concern might be that
some of the apps that they use might not work on
WIN2003. Pretty sure that this is the case but I would
have to check this.

I do not mind doing this via the NewsGroup so that
everyone else can learn from my situation ( and your
suggestions / advice ).

Time is not that pressing

Thank you,

Randy Layman

Definitely best to test (thoroughly) all of your apps on Windows Server 2003, even by setting up a workstation with Server 2003 Eval Edition to do your testing

Check for WTSUPRN.Inf on MetaFrame 1.8 which controls printer mapping in much the same way as the alternate inf file you configured for RDP
