Styles other than "footnote text" in footnotes?

Is it OK to use styles other than "footnote text" in a footnote

I often encounter multi-paragraph footnotes in my job, sometimes including block quotes and the like. I think I remember someone, somewhere telling me that footnotes should never be styled in anything other than "footnote text," and that any additional formatting should be added directly. But I don't entirely trust that recollection

Many thanks

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't use other styles in footnotes as
needed, with these caveats:

1. If your Footnote Text style is a smaller font than the document body text
(which it is by default--10-pt, whereas Normal and Body Text are 12-pt),
then you'd need to modify styles intended for use in the document body
(whether it's worthwhile to create new footnote styles depends on how often
you'd need to use them).

2. You should avoid styles with an outline level (headings) that might be
picked up by the TOC.

I suspect that whoever told you to apply direct formatting just meant that,
in the long run, this is more efficient than creating new styles unless
you're going to use them a lot.

Thanks for the speedy response

I think what might have happened is I was confusing Footnote & Footer...I know that Footer text should always have the Footer style applied, and maybe I overextended from there. 8^)

I use other styles in the footer some times. When you have a different
style, you may not have toolbar access to AutoText.

That's interesting; I was under the impression that headers & footers should always be in their respective styles. For what it's worth, I know that the diagnostic software DocXTools looks for headers & footers styled in Normal (or something else) and flags them as "problems."

I frequently create custom header/footer styles when I want the odd/even
header footer to have different alignment or font formatting. The custom
styles are based on the Header/Footer styles, and I think the AutoText is
still available, but I won't swear to that since I never use it anyway.

They _are_ problems if you want to use the AutoText menu on the toolbar.
Most of my other styles used in headers/footers are based on the header or
footer style. I do have letterhead which has three or four styles used in
the header that are not based on the header or footer styles. I don't use
the AutoText from the toolbar in my letterhead, though.

I _never_ use the normal style or styles based on normal in templates. That
may be superstitious behavior. (If you have the box checked in Tools =>
Templates and Add-Ins to update styles from the template, you are most
likely to run into problems if you've used the normal style. On the other
hand, that box should not be checked and you are just getting what you
deserve if you check it.)

We are looking for a way to put a footnote on our draft documents that says something like "Draft" with the page number centered and at the right margin, the date and time" Do you know of any way to set this up in Autotext. When I try to add "DRAFT, Page #, Date, Time" when I click on that in auto text it says exactly those words, but doesn't put the actual date and time, etc. HELP!

It's much better to start a new thread if you don't have *exactly* the same
question.

What you want is a footer, click View | Headers/Footers, put the cursor in
the footer, type draft, use the H/F toolbar to insert the page number, and
use the Insert | Field command to get the date and time. You will need to
save the document, and maybe select the Date and Time fields and hit F9 to
update them before they show as you want. Once you have what you want, save
it as an AutoText entry yourself.

Oops. There are Insert Date and Time icons on the Header/Footer toolbar that
you can use.
